First images of 2013 Skoda Fabia reveal new look and platform
Leaked photos show the third-generation Skoda Fabia adopting a design in line with the Rapid and sharing its underpinnings with the Volkswagen Polo.
Images of the third-generation Skoda Fabia have surfaced online, showing the supermini with a new look that aligns it closely with the recently launched Skoda Rapid. The new Fabia is set to arrive in 2013, with these early photos providing the first clear view of its exterior changes and technical direction.
The most noticeable change is at the front. The Fabia now carries a sharper, more angular fascia, echoing the design language established by the Rapid. Slimmer headlamps, a wider grille and a more sculpted bonnet bring the car in line with Skoda's evolving brand identity. The similarities to the Rapid are particularly clear when viewed head-on, suggesting a deliberate move to unify the look of Skoda’s small car range.
New platform and more space
Underneath, the 2013 Fabia switches to a new platform that it shares with the Volkswagen Polo. This technical update brings a longer and wider body, which Skoda claims will translate into more interior space. Rear seat occupants in particular are expected to benefit from the increased dimensions, addressing a key weakness of the outgoing model.
Boot capacity and overall practicality have not been detailed, but the move to a larger platform suggests Skoda is targeting buyers who might otherwise look to rivals such as the Peugeot 208 or Kia Cee’d for space and versatility. The Fabia’s reputation for value and sensible packaging is likely to remain central to its appeal.
Engine range and RS plans
The engine line-up will mirror that of the Volkswagen Polo, with the most economical option being a 1.2-litre TDI diesel producing 75hp. At the upper end, a 1.2-litre TSI petrol unit is expected to deliver up to 115hp. Both engines are already familiar from elsewhere in the Volkswagen Group, and should help the Fabia compete on both efficiency and performance.
A new Fabia RS hot hatch is reported to be in development, but is not scheduled to arrive until a year after the standard model’s launch. Details on the RS remain scarce, though it is likely to build on the performance improvements of the new platform and engine range.
Market timing and rivals
The 2013 Fabia is set to reach showrooms next year. It will compete in a crowded segment, facing updated rivals such as the Peugeot 208, Kia Cee’d and the Volkswagen Polo itself. Further details, including pricing and full specifications, are expected from Skoda later in the year.
