2014 GMC Sierra debuts with new engines and advanced features
GMC has revealed the 2014 Sierra pickup, featuring new EcoTec3 engines, upgraded technology and a revised interior, with live images highlighting its updated design.
GMC has unveiled the 2014 Sierra, showing the new pickup in full for the first time. The launch brings live images of the redesigned truck, which introduces a new engine lineup, more standard technology and improvements to both cabin and chassis.
Engine range and technical upgrades
The 2014 Sierra introduces GMC’s EcoTec3 engine family. Buyers will have a choice of three petrol units: a 4.3-litre V6, a 5.3-litre V8 and a 6.2-litre V8. Each engine gets direct fuel injection, continuously variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management, which allows the engine to run on fewer cylinders under light loads to save fuel. GMC says these changes deliver more power and torque than the previous generation, along with improved efficiency, though official EPA figures have not yet been released.
All engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel disc brakes are now standard, and hydraulic power steering has been replaced by an electric system, which should reduce drag on the engine and further improve fuel economy.
Design and equipment highlights
Live images of the 2014 Sierra show a more sculpted front end, with projector beam headlights as standard, unique in the segment at launch. The cargo bed features a tie-down system intended to improve practicality for work and leisure use. Inside, the cabin has been reworked with new soft-touch materials, aluminium trim and a redesigned dashboard. A 4.2-inch colour Driver Information Center is now standard, along with an updated instrument cluster and a trip computer.
Connectivity and comfort have also been addressed. The new Sierra offers improved in-cabin technology, though GMC has not yet detailed the full list of features. The company has said more information, including pricing, will be released closer to the US on-sale date in 2013.
Where the Sierra fits in GMC’s line-up
The Sierra remains GMC’s mainstay full-size pickup, positioned against rivals such as the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150.
