Fresh digital renderings have surfaced showing what a 2015 Chrysler 200 Convertible could look like, only days after Chrysler unveiled the new 200 saloon at the Detroit Auto Show. The images, created by rendering artist Theophilus Chin, adapt the newly revealed four-door into a two-door drop-top, hinting at a possible future body style for the model.
Chrysler has not confirmed any plans for a convertible version of the 2015 200, but the rendered images circulate as speculation grows about the return of an open-top variant. The previous-generation Chrysler 200 was available as a convertible, and the new model’s sleeker lines and more premium interior make the idea of a successor plausible, at least in theory.
Chrysler 200 Convertible: The Rendered Design
The renderings retain the new 200’s front-end styling, including the slim headlights and prominent grille, while reworking the roofline and rear deck to suit a two-door convertible format. The car appears with a fabric roof stowed, suggesting a soft-top approach rather than a folding hardtop. The proportions are similar to the outgoing 200 Convertible, but with the sharper, more modern cues of the 2015 saloon.
Inside, the 2015 Chrysler 200 saloon features upgraded materials, a redesigned centre console, and available heated leather seats. The renderings do not show the interior, but any convertible version would likely carry over the digital instrument cluster and 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system from the saloon.
Engine Options and Platform
If a convertible were to be produced, it would almost certainly share the saloon’s powertrain options. The 2015 Chrysler 200 is built on FCA’s Compact US Wide platform and offers two engines: a 2.4-litre Tigershark four-cylinder with 184hp and 234Nm of torque, and a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 producing 295hp and 355Nm. Both engines are paired with a nine-speed automatic gearbox, with all-wheel drive available on V6 models.
Convertible Market Context
The previous Chrysler 200 Convertible, discontinued after the 2014 model year, competed with models such as the Ford Mustang Convertible and Volkswagen Eos. The segment has shrunk in recent years, with fewer mainstream convertibles on offer in the US. Chrysler’s decision to focus on the saloon may reflect changing buyer preferences as well as the broader decline of mid-sized convertibles.
For now, the 2015 Chrysler 200 Convertible exists only as a digital proposal. Whether Chrysler will pursue a new open-top variant remains unconfirmed. The renderings, however, give a clear idea of how the new 200’s design language could translate to a convertible, should the company revisit the idea in future.
