Ford unveils 2015 F-150 with aluminium body and new engines
The 2015 Ford F-150, revealed ahead of its Detroit debut, introduces an aluminium-intensive body, new EcoBoost V6 options and a suite of technology updates.
Ford has officially unveiled the 2015 F-150, introducing a new generation of its best-selling pickup with a focus on weight reduction, fuel efficiency and updated technology. The model was revealed ahead of its public debut at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The most substantial change for 2015 is the switch to an aluminium-intensive body, which Ford says reduces the truck's weight by as much as 317kg compared to its predecessor. The move to aluminium panels, combined with a high-strength steel frame, is aimed at improving both fuel economy and payload capacity, while maintaining the F-150's reputation for durability. Ford claims this is the toughest F-150 yet, with no compromise on strength despite the weight savings.
Engine range and technical updates
The 2015 F-150 launches with four engines. The new 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 joins the range, targeting buyers after a balance of power and efficiency. The larger 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 returns, alongside a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 and the 5.0-litre Ti-VCT V8. Ford has not released official power or economy figures at launch, but the new engines are expected to improve fuel consumption figures over the outgoing model.
Ford will offer the 2015 F-150 in five trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, Platinum and King Ranch. Appearance, Sport and FX4 Off-Road packages will be available, giving buyers a broad range of customisation options. The F-150's design draws clear inspiration from the Atlas concept and the larger F-Series Super Duty models, with a bold grille, prominent headlamps and pronounced wheel arches. The tailgate features an integrated spoiler, while the cabin receives upgraded materials and a more modern layout.
Cabin and technology features
Inside, the 2015 F-150 adopts higher-grade materials and a suite of new technology. Ford's SYNC and MyFord Touch infotainment systems are available, with an 8-inch display in the instrument cluster. The truck also introduces features such as a 360-degree camera system, rearview camera, trailer brake controller and trailer hitch assist. Practical additions include LED lighting in the cargo bed, integrated loading ramps, a remote tailgate release and Ford's BoxLink cargo management system.

Market position and availability
Ford's F-150 remains a key product in the US pickup market, and the changes for 2015 are intended to keep it competitive against rivals. Pricing for the new model was not disclosed at launch, but sales are scheduled to begin later in 2014.
