Ford unveils second-generation S-MAX ahead of Paris debut
The new Ford S-MAX brings fresh styling, advanced seating features and a range of EcoBoost and TDCi engines, with its public debut set for the 2014 Paris Motor Show.
Ford has officially revealed the second-generation S-MAX, confirming the new MPV will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2014. The new S-MAX updates Ford’s family seven-seater with styling and technology in line with the latest Mondeo.
Styling and platform changes
The 2015 S-MAX adopts Ford’s latest design language, including a prominent trapezoidal front grille and sculpted headlights reminiscent of the Focus and Fiesta. The new model sits on the same platform as the latest Mondeo, bringing updated proportions and improved refinement over the outgoing S-MAX.
Ford previewed the look with the S-MAX Concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The production version carries over many of those cues, aiming to balance a sporty appearance with the practicality expected from a family MPV.
Interior features and flexibility
A focus on flexibility and convenience sees the new S-MAX introduce power-folding second and third row seats, a first for the segment. The system allows both rows to be stowed flat at the push of a button. Ford also adds an electronically adjustable steering column, hands-free boot opening, and the option of heated and cooled massage seats for front occupants.
Engine range and technical details
Ford has confirmed a range of EcoBoost petrol and TDCi diesel engines for the S-MAX. Petrol options will include a 1.5-litre EcoBoost with 158 hp and a 2.0-litre EcoBoost producing 237 hp. Diesel buyers will have three versions of the 2.0-litre TDCi to choose from, with outputs of 118 hp, 148 hp and 177 hp. Transmission choices will include a six-speed manual and a dual-clutch automatic, depending on the engine.

The S-MAX’s engine line-up is expected to deliver improved efficiency and lower emissions compared with the outgoing model, though official figures will be detailed at the Paris show. The new model also benefits from the latest safety and driver assistance systems available on the Mondeo platform.
Market launch and segment context
Ford has scheduled the S-MAX’s public debut for the Paris Motor Show in October 2014, with sales expected to begin across Europe in summer 2015. The S-MAX continues to target buyers seeking a more dynamic alternative to traditional MPVs, and will compete alongside models such as the Renault Espace and Citroën Grand C4 Picasso.
