Honda Civic Type R draws crowds at 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show
Honda’s 310hp Civic Type R, already seen at Geneva, made its Frankfurt debut with aggressive styling, a turbocharged engine and a focus on track-inspired performance.
Honda’s Civic Type R made its first Frankfurt Motor Show appearance in September 2015, following its earlier unveiling at Geneva. The 310hp hot hatch, finished in a striking red, drew heavy attention on the Honda stand, underlining the brand’s renewed focus on performance. Although not a brand-new reveal, the Frankfurt showing marked the car’s arrival for many German and European buyers. The Type R’s bodywork, with its oversized rear wing, quad exhausts and aggressive bumpers, left little doubt about its intent. Large wheels house red Brembo brake calipers, and the interior continues the red theme, echoing the car’s motorsport ambitions.
Engine and performance
The Civic Type R is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 310hp and 400Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. Honda claims 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 270km/h, figures that put it among the fastest front-drive hot hatches of its time. Chassis upgrades include an Advanced Dual Axis Strut Front Suspension, a four-wheel adaptive damper system and retuned steering. Brembo brakes are standard, and buyers can choose from five exterior colours, including Championship White and Brilliant Sporty Blue.
Styling and interior details
The Frankfurt show car wore a vivid red finish, with the same hue carried over to interior accents and brake calipers. The body kit features a large rear wing, sculpted side skirts and a prominent front splitter. Inside, the Type R adds sports seats, red trim and unique badging, reinforcing its position as the range’s performance flagship.
Colour options and customisation
Honda offered buyers a choice of five exterior colours for the Civic Type R: Championship White, Milano Red, Polished Metal, Crystal Black, and Brilliant Sporty Blue. This range allowed enthusiasts to personalise their car’s appearance, whether they preferred a classic motorsport-inspired white or a more understated metallic finish. The red theme was particularly prominent on the Frankfurt show car, but each colour option was designed to highlight the Type R’s aggressive styling cues.
Chassis and handling technology
Beyond its power, the Civic Type R’s chassis was engineered for sharp handling and high-speed stability. The Advanced Dual Axis Strut Front Suspension aimed to reduce torque steer, while the Four-Wheel Adaptive Damper System adjusted suspension stiffness in real time to suit driving conditions. Retuned steering provided more direct feedback, and the Brembo braking system ensured strong stopping power for enthusiastic driving. These features combined to give the Type R a dynamic edge over standard Civics and many of its hot hatch rivals.

At its launch, the Civic Type R’s 310hp output made it the most powerful production Honda ever sold in Europe.
