Lamborghini Huracan Spyder drops its top at 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show
Lamborghini has unveiled the Huracan Spyder at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, introducing a 602hp open-top supercar to rival Ferrari and McLaren convertibles.
Lamborghini has officially revealed the Huracan Spyder at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, expanding the Huracan range with a convertible version aimed squarely at the Ferrari 488 Spider and McLaren 650S Spider. The new model brings open-air driving to Lamborghini’s entry-level supercar for the first time since the Gallardo Spyder.
The Huracan Spyder keeps the coupe’s rear mid-engined, all-wheel drive layout and 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10, producing 602hp (449kW) and 560Nm of torque. Power is delivered through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Lamborghini claims the Spyder accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 3.4 seconds, just two tenths slower than the coupe, with a top speed exceeding 200mph.
A new lightweight fabric roof operates at speeds up to 30mph and folds away in 17 seconds. Lamborghini says the new body shell is 40 percent stiffer than the old Gallardo Spyder, and the company promises minimal compromise in handling compared to the fixed-roof Huracan. The Spyder’s structure and roof mechanism add some weight, but performance remains close to the coupe’s figures.
How the Huracan Spyder compares to rivals
With its launch, the Huracan Spyder enters a competitive field alongside the Ferrari 488 Spider and McLaren 650S Spider, both of which offer similar performance and open-top thrills. Lamborghini’s approach focuses on naturally aspirated power, in contrast to the turbocharged engines used by its main competitors. The Huracan Spyder’s soft top also distinguishes it from the folding hardtops found on some rivals, keeping weight down and operation simple.

Pricing and availability
Lamborghini has set a starting price of €186,450 for the Huracan Spyder, with first customer deliveries due in spring 2016. The unveiling at Frankfurt follows the recent debut of the Aventador SV Roadster, marking a busy year for Lamborghini’s open-top models.
