Mercedes-Benz Unveils 2015 CLS with Multibeam LED Headlights
The 2015 CLS arrives with a sharper look, new Multibeam LED lighting, updated engines and a nine-speed automatic option across several diesel and petrol variants.
Mercedes-Benz has officially revealed the facelifted 2015 CLS, introducing new Multibeam LED headlights, revised styling and updates to its engine and transmission range. The refreshed four-door coupé and Shooting Brake models will reach European showrooms in the second half of 2014.
New Multibeam LED Headlights and Styling Tweaks
The most prominent technical update is the adoption of Multibeam LED headlights, each with 24 individually controlled LEDs. Mercedes-Benz says the system can adjust the light pattern up to 100 times per second, using data from a camera and sensors to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers while maximising visibility. This technology is standard across the facelifted CLS range.
Styling revisions are subtle but effective. The front bumper gains larger air intakes, the grille adopts a diamond pattern, and the taillights feature a darker tint. Inside, the CLS receives a new three-spoke steering wheel and a freestanding 8-inch colour display, updating the cabin to match newer Mercedes models.
Engine Lineup and New Transmission
The engine range for the 2015 CLS covers both diesel and petrol options. The entry-level CLS 220 BlueTEC uses a 2.1-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel producing 170hp and 400Nm of torque. The CLS 250 BlueTEC features the same engine tuned for 204hp and 500Nm. The CLS 350 BlueTEC moves up to a 3.0-litre V6 diesel with 258hp and 620Nm.
For petrol buyers, the CLS 400 replaces the previous CLS 350 CGI, now powered by a 3.5-litre biturbo V6 with 333hp and 480Nm. The CLS 500 retains its 4.7-litre V8, delivering 408hp and 600Nm. At the top of the range, the AMG versions use a 5.5-litre V8, with the standard model rated at 557hp and 720Nm, and the S variant boosted to 585hp and 800Nm.
What Changes Mean for Buyers
The facelift brings the CLS closer in line with Mercedes’ latest design language and technology, particularly in lighting and infotainment. The Multibeam LED headlights set a new benchmark for adaptive lighting in the segment. The expanded use of the nine-speed automatic should improve both efficiency and refinement, particularly for high-mileage diesel buyers. The updated engines and transmission options also help the CLS stay competitive against rivals such as the Audi A7 and BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé.
