Ram introduced the 1500 EcoDiesel HFE at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, highlighting its position as the most fuel-efficient full-size pickup available in the United States at launch. The HFE, standing for High Fuel Efficiency, is aimed at buyers who value lower running costs and reduced fuel consumption in a segment known for large, powerful trucks.

Introduction to the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel HFE

Engine and Efficiency

The centrepiece of the EcoDiesel HFE is its 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 engine. This powerplant produces 240hp and 420lb-ft of torque, and is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine is designed to deliver strong torque for everyday usability while maintaining impressive fuel efficiency. Official EPA ratings stand at 21mpg in the city, 29mpg on the highway, and 24mpg combined. At the time of launch, this made the HFE the class leader for fuel economy among full-size pickups in the US market.

To achieve these figures, Ram made several aerodynamic and equipment changes. The HFE model receives a tri-fold tonneau cover to reduce drag, a body-coloured front fascia for a sleeker look, and side steps that also contribute to improved airflow. These touches help distinguish the HFE from other Ram 1500 models, although the basic silhouette remains true to the rest of the range.

Position in the Ram 1500 Range

The EcoDiesel HFE joins the broader Ram 1500 line-up as a dedicated efficiency model. While other variants like the Rebel and Laramie Limited focus on off-road performance or luxury features, the HFE is targeted at fleet operators and private owners who prioritise fuel economy and lower operating costs. The HFE is offered only with the diesel engine, reinforcing its focus on efficiency over outright performance or towing capacity. At launch, Ram had not published specific acceleration or towing figures for the HFE, keeping the emphasis firmly on its economy credentials.

Availability and Pricing

Ram confirmed that the 1500 EcoDiesel HFE would go on sale in the first quarter of 2015. However, pricing details were not available at the time of the reveal and were expected to be announced closer to the on-sale date. This approach is typical for new model launches, allowing the manufacturer to gauge interest and position the HFE competitively against both internal rivals and other fuel-efficient pickups from competing brands.

Visual and Practical Features

Beyond its engine and efficiency improvements, the HFE incorporates several visual and practical updates. The body-coloured fascia gives the truck a more unified appearance, while the tri-fold tonneau cover not only aids aerodynamics but also offers added security for cargo. Side steps provide easier access to the cabin and contribute to the truck's distinctive look. These features, while subtle, help set the HFE apart from other Ram 1500 models in the showroom.

Ram's Focus on Efficiency

The introduction of the EcoDiesel HFE reflects Ram's broader strategy to lead in fuel efficiency within the full-size pickup segment. The adoption of the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission in earlier models had already signalled this direction, and the HFE builds on that foundation. By offering a diesel-powered, high-efficiency variant, Ram aims to appeal to a growing segment of buyers who want the capability of a full-size truck without the traditional penalty at the fuel pump.
