Next-generation Opel Astra Spied Testing Ahead of Debut
Opel’s 2015 Astra has been spotted in development once again, revealing more about its lighter platform, new engine range and expected body styles.
Opel’s development of the next-generation Astra has surfaced again, with fresh spy shots capturing the 2015 model testing on European roads. The C-segment hatchback, a mainstay in Opel’s line-up and a direct rival to the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus, is in the final stages of development ahead of its expected unveiling later in 2014.
The new Astra will switch to GM’s D2XX platform, which also underpins the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze. This modular architecture is designed to bring weight savings and flexibility, with Opel targeting a reduction of 50 to 100 kg compared to the outgoing Astra J. The same platform supports the Ampera and Volt, giving Opel room to adapt the car for various powertrains and markets.
Engine range and efficiency improvements
Opel is preparing a new family of three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines for the Astra. These units are expected to be both more powerful and more efficient than the current line-up, in line with tightening emissions standards and market demand for lower running costs. Downsizing and turbocharging will play a central role, though specific outputs have not yet been confirmed.
The move to smaller, lighter engines should help the Astra compete more directly with the likes of the Peugeot 308 and Renault Megane, both of which have recently shifted to lighter chassis and more efficient powertrains. Opel’s aim is to match or exceed the fuel economy and emissions performance of its main European rivals.
Body styles and model range
Spy images suggest Opel will again offer the Astra in several body styles. The five-door hatchback will form the core of the range, but a four-door saloon, Sports Tourer estate and GTC three-door coupe are also in development. This broad approach mirrors Opel’s strategy with the outgoing Astra, allowing it to compete across a range of buyer preferences in Europe.
