Renault unveils new Twingo ahead of Geneva debut
Renault has officially revealed the next-generation Twingo, confirming a five-door hatchback layout and a sliding fabric roof, with its public debut set for the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.
Renault has taken the wraps off the new-generation Twingo, confirming the car’s design and key features ahead of its first public appearance at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The 2015 Twingo adopts a five-door hatchback configuration for the first time in the model’s history, dropping the previous three-door option.
The new Twingo’s styling draws clear inspiration from Renault’s Twin’Run and Twin’Z concept cars, with a short bonnet, upright stance and prominent Renault badge. The car features circular LED daytime running lights, hidden rear door handles and distinctive rear lights, giving it a more expressive look than its predecessor. Renault will offer the Twingo in four bright paint finishes at launch: white, light blue, yellow and red. A range of customisation options will also be available, aimed at younger urban buyers.
A sliding soft top roof, similar in style to those on the Fiat 500C and Citroën DS3 Cabrio, will be available. This convertible-like feature is intended to broaden the Twingo’s appeal in city car markets, where open-roof options have proved popular. The car’s compact proportions and five-door layout are designed to maximise practicality without increasing the overall footprint.
Design and practicality
The move to a five-door-only body style marks a departure from previous Twingo generations, aligning the car more closely with rivals such as the Volkswagen Up and Peugeot 108, which have also favoured five-door configurations in recent years. Hidden rear door handles help preserve the visual impression of a three-door, while improving access for rear passengers. The sliding soft top adds a degree of flexibility for buyers seeking open-air driving without committing to a full convertible.
What’s still to come
Renault has not yet released interior images or detailed technical specifications. The company has confirmed that these will be announced during the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014. Details on engine options, transmission choices and interior features are expected at that time. The Twingo’s announcement follows a series of leaks and teasers, and comes as other city cars are also preparing for Geneva debuts, including the 2015 Mazda2 and the updated Peugeot 508.
