Volkswagen Polo R Imagined in New Rendering for 2015

A digital rendering of a 2015 Volkswagen Polo R has surfaced, offering an early look at what a flagship hot hatch version of the Polo could look like if Volkswagen decided to launch one. The image, created by independent designer Theophilus Chin, imagines the Polo R in three-door form with a more aggressive stance and styling cues borrowed from the larger Golf R.
Volkswagen has already revealed a facelifted Polo for 2014, with the Polo GTI topping the current range. The GTI features a 1.8-litre TSI engine producing 192hp, but some enthusiasts have long called for a true R-badged model to sit above it. The new rendering plays directly to those hopes, showing a Polo with larger, likely 18- or 19-inch wheels, a prominent R badge on the grille, and a body kit that suggests more power under the bonnet.
Speculation on Powertrain and Positioning
If Volkswagen were to build a Polo R based on the current platform, the most likely engine candidate would be a detuned version of the Golf R’s 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder. While the Golf R produces 300hp, industry speculation suggests a Polo R could be set at around 250hp to avoid overlapping with its larger sibling. This would represent a substantial jump over the Polo GTI and bring the Polo R into contention with other high-powered superminis.
The rendering’s visual upgrades include deeper front and rear bumpers, side skirts, a rear spoiler and larger wheels. These elements are typical for R-badged Volkswagens, and the imagined Polo R follows the template set by the Golf R and previous special editions. If built, the Polo R would likely feature uprated brakes, firmer suspension and a more focused chassis setup to match the extra power.
Design Cues and Market Context
For now, the Polo GTI remains the most powerful regular production Polo. The rendered Polo R is a digital exercise, but it illustrates the potential for a more potent hot hatch in the segment if Volkswagen decides to move forward with such a model in the future.
