Audi unveils 2016 A4 Sedan and Avant with lighter chassis and new tech
Audi has revealed the 2016 A4 in both saloon and Avant estate forms, featuring a lighter platform, revised engines and a fully overhauled interior.
Audi has taken the wraps off the 2016 A4, introducing both the saloon and Avant estate versions ahead of their autumn sales launch. The new A4 targets rivals such as the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Jaguar XE, with a focus on reduced weight, improved efficiency and a major technology upgrade.
The new A4 sits on an updated platform that helps cut weight by as much as 120kg compared to its predecessor. The entry-level model now weighs 1,320kg without the driver. The body’s dimensions have grown slightly: the car is 25mm longer and 16mm wider, while the wheelbase increases by 12mm. The Avant’s boot offers 505 litres of space with the seats up, expanding to 1,510 litres when folded.
Engine range and transmissions
Audi offers a wide range of engines for the 2016 A4. Petrol choices start with a 1.4-litre TFSI producing 150hp and 250Nm, and a 2.0-litre TFSI in two states of tune: 190hp/320Nm or 252hp/370Nm. Diesel options include a 2.0-litre TDI with either 150hp/320Nm or 190hp/400Nm. The flagship diesel is a 3.0-litre V6 TDI, available with 218hp/400Nm or 272hp/600Nm.

Most four-cylinder engines are paired with a new six-speed manual gearbox that is 16kg lighter than before. The 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch is standard on higher-output engines, while the most powerful 3.0 TDI comes with an 8-speed automatic. The Avant will also be offered as a g-tron model running on compressed natural gas, using a 2.0 TFSI engine rated at 170hp and 270Nm.
Interior and technology
Audi has completely redesigned the A4’s interior. The dashboard features a new 8.3-inch infotainment display, voice control and available Wi-Fi. Higher-spec models offer a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and optional Bang & Olufsen audio. Rear-seat passengers can use a new entertainment system with two 10.1-inch tablets. LED ambient lighting offers a choice of 30 colours. Smartphone integration supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Market launch and competitors
Audi’s focus on weight reduction, expanded engine options and a more advanced cabin aims to keep the A4 competitive in the premium compact segment as it enters its next generation.
