Mazda has introduced the new-generation MX-5 to the Australian market, offering buyers a choice between 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines, with pricing starting at $31,990 AUD for the entry-level manual. The new model arrives as a full redesign, targeting enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike.
Australian pricing and model range
The 2016 MX-5 line-up in Australia covers six variants, split across engine size, transmission, and equipment level. The 1.5-litre engine produces 96 kW and 150 Nm, paired with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The manual costs $31,990 AUD, while the automatic version is $33,990 AUD. The GT trim with the same engine is priced at $37,990 AUD (manual) and $39,990 AUD (automatic).
For buyers wanting more power, the 2.0-litre engine delivers 118 kW and 200 Nm. The standard 2.0-litre manual is listed at $34,490 AUD, with the automatic at $36,490 AUD. The flagship GT 2.0-litre manual is $39,550 AUD, and the automatic tops the range at $41,550 AUD.
Standard equipment and features
All Australian MX-5s are fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, a cloth soft-top, black cloth upholstery, six-speaker audio, cruise control, push-button start, Bluetooth, AUX and USB connectivity, and a limited slip differential. The GT specification adds black leather upholstery, climate control, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, heated side mirrors, and keyless entry.
