Mazda will introduce the MX-5 Club, a performance-focused variant of its fourth-generation MX-5, at the 2015 New York Auto Show on 1 April. The new Club model is expected to sit above the standard car in the range, offering buyers a more aggressive take on the Japanese roadster.

Mazda has not released full technical details for the MX-5 Club ahead of the New York unveiling, but company statements describe it as the most aggressive version in the new MX-5 line-up. While specifics are still under wraps, the Club is expected to feature weight-saving measures and unique exterior styling elements to distinguish it from the standard car.

Fourth-generation MX-5 enters production

Production of the fourth-generation MX-5 began recently at Mazda's Hiroshima facility in Japan. The new model, internally known as the ND, measures 3,915mm long, 1,730mm wide and 1,235mm high, with a kerb weight starting from just 998kg. Compared to its predecessor, the new car is 105mm shorter, 10mm wider and 20mm lower, continuing Mazda's focus on lightness and agility.

Engine options for the new MX-5 differ by market. The US and Canada will receive a 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 155hp, paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox. Other markets, including Europe, will offer a 1.5-litre engine rated at 129hp. The Club model is expected to use the 2.0-litre unit, though this will be confirmed at the show.

What to expect at New York

Mazda is positioning the MX-5 Club as the enthusiast’s choice, likely featuring chassis upgrades and exterior details aimed at drivers seeking sharper dynamics. Full specifications, pricing and availability will be announced at the car’s official reveal in New York.
