Alfa Romeo 4C to Make Production Debut at Frankfurt
Alfa Romeo will unveil the production-ready 4C sports car at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, marking its return to the lightweight performance segment.
Alfa Romeo has confirmed that the production version of its 4C sports car will be revealed at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The announcement follows the 4C Concept’s earlier appearance at Geneva, with the Italian marque now set to re-enter the compact sports car market.
The 4C draws on technology and materials from the larger 8C Competizione, including extensive use of aluminium and carbon fibre to achieve a curb weight of just 850 kg. This focus on lightness sets the 4C apart from many rivals and is central to the car’s expected performance.
Under the rear deck sits a 1.75-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, closely related to the unit found in the Giulietta but tuned to deliver 235 horsepower. Alfa Romeo has stated a top speed of 250 km/h. The engine is paired with a dual-clutch transmission, sending power to the rear wheels.
Production and market launch
Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has said that production of the 4C will begin immediately after its Frankfurt debut. Alfa Romeo expects to have the car in showrooms during the first half of 2014, targeting enthusiasts seeking a lightweight, agile sports car with Italian character.
Return to the sports car segment
The 4C’s arrival marks Alfa Romeo’s renewed push into the sports car market after several years without a dedicated lightweight coupe. The car’s combination of low weight, turbocharged power and rear-wheel drive is aimed directly at driving enthusiasts.
