Audi RS4 Avant: Production Model Matches Rendered Looks
The 2020 Audi RS4 Avant debuts with styling close to earlier renderings, retaining its 450hp V6 and introducing sharper front-end design cues.
Audi has unveiled the 2020 RS4 Avant, and the production car closely matches the digital renderings that circulated ahead of its launch. The new model adopts sharper front-end styling, including more geometric headlights and a revised grille, while keeping the familiar fast estate silhouette that defines the RS4 lineage.
The most noticeable changes are at the front, where the RS4 Avant now features a squashed hexagonal grille with black mesh and small intakes above, referencing the original Ur Quattro. The headlights are more angular, in line with the latest A4 and S4 updates, and the front bumper is more aggressive. At the rear, changes are limited to updated taillight graphics, while the signature oval exhaust tips and wider stance remain unchanged.
Engine and performance
Under the bonnet, Audi continues with the 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6, delivering 450hp and 600Nm of torque in European specification. North American models receive the same engine, rated at 444hp and 442 lb-ft. This powertrain is shared with the Porsche Macan, and while some fans had hoped for a power increase, Audi has focused on refining the package rather than chasing higher output figures.
The RS4 Avant uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive. Optional extras include carbon-ceramic brakes, a sport exhaust, and a higher top speed package. The chassis setup and drivetrain are in line with other recent RS models, prioritising all-weather performance and everyday usability.
Interior and technology
Inside, the RS4 Avant adopts updates from the wider A4 range. The most notable change is the new 10-inch touchscreen MMI infotainment system, replacing the previous rotary dial and freeing up additional storage space. Optional carbon-fibre trim and an Alcantara steering wheel are available to lift the cabin’s sporting feel, though the overall architecture remains familiar from earlier A4 and RS4 models.
Market position and pricing
German sales for the 2020 RS4 Avant begin in December 2019, with prices starting from €81,400. This generation is expected to remain on sale for about three years. Audi has indicated that a plug-in hybrid successor is under consideration, but for now the RS4 Avant remains a purely petrol-powered performance estate.
