BMW will recall approximately 2,500 model year 2008 and 2009 M3s in the United States, following a notification to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall covers cars equipped with the optional double clutch transmission, after BMW identified a software fault that can cause the engine to stall during certain driving conditions.

The issue arises when the transmission software commands a multistage downshift during rapid deceleration. At low speeds, this can lead to the engine stalling, increasing the risk of a crash. BMW said the problem is limited to M3s fitted with the double clutch gearbox and does not affect cars with manual transmissions or other models in the range.

Remedy and owner notification

Dealers will update the engine and transmission control software free of charge. The recall campaign is scheduled to begin in November 2008. Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted directly by BMW, and further details are available through the company's customer service channels.

  • Recall affects 2,500 2008-2009 BMW M3s in the US
  • Only vehicles with the double clutch transmission are involved
  • Software update will be applied at no cost to owners
  • Engine stalling can occur during rapid deceleration at low speeds
