European new car sales rose 11% in August 2015, according to figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), with SUV demand driving the second-largest monthly gain of the year. Total registrations reached 781,676 units, up from 701,251 in August 2014.

SUVs Lead the Market Gains

Manufacturers with strong SUV line-ups posted the largest increases. Renault Group sales jumped 20% in August, buoyed by the launch of the Kadjar compact SUV and continued strength from the Captur crossover. PSA Peugeot Citroën sales rose 9.2%, helped by the C4 Cactus, which contributed to a 14% rise in registrations for the group.

BMW Group saw a 21% increase in sales, with the BMW brand up 17% and Mini also performing strongly after a range refresh. BMW’s X1, X4 and X6 SUVs were key contributors, with the new X1 debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Mercedes-Benz delivered a 19% rise, driven by the popularity of the GLA compact SUV. Porsche, part of the Volkswagen Group, posted a 34% sales increase, reflecting the continuing appeal of premium SUVs across Europe.

Year-to-Date and Other Brand Performances

For the first eight months of 2015, European car sales reached 9.38 million units, an increase of 8.6% over the same period in 2014. July had already seen a 9.5% year-on-year rise, indicating sustained momentum through the summer.

Volkswagen Group, the region’s largest automaker, recorded a 5.7% increase in August registrations. Skoda’s sales rose 12%, while Audi posted an 8.2% gain. The Mini brand, following its recent update, contributed to BMW Group’s overall growth. These results highlight the breadth of the upturn, but the strongest gains were concentrated among brands with competitive SUV offerings.

SUVs Reshape the European Market

The August figures confirm that SUVs have become the main growth engine for European car sales in 2015. Compact and crossover models, such as the Renault Kadjar, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, have expanded their share, attracting buyers from traditional hatchback and MPV segments. Several manufacturers are now prioritising new SUV launches and shifting production to meet demand, as seen in recent strategies from PSA and Fiat.

What the Growth Means for Manufacturers

The surge in SUV sales has intensified competition among European brands, rewarding those with fresh models in the segment. For Renault, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the August figures validate recent investments in compact SUVs. PSA’s growth with the C4 Cactus and Volkswagen Group’s continued expansion in the SUV and crossover market underline the segment’s centrality to European sales strategies.

With the Frankfurt Motor Show bringing further SUV debuts in September 2015, manufacturers are expected to keep prioritising this segment. The August results suggest that SUV demand will remain a decisive factor in shaping the European car market for the remainder of the year.
