A 25-year-old American has listed a Bugatti Veyron replica for sale online at $89,000, offering one of the cheapest ways to acquire the look of the French hypercar, if not the performance. The car, built from a Ford Cougar, is a one-off project constructed by the seller and is not a genuine Bugatti.

The project started with a Ford Cougar coupe, retaining its 2.5-litre V6 engine, standard wheelbase and transmission. According to the seller, the car has covered more than 193,000 km. The result is a vehicle that outwardly mimics the Bugatti Veyron’s styling but shares none of its mechanicals or performance credentials.

The original Bugatti Veyron, launched in 2005, is powered by an 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine producing over 1,000 horsepower and capable of a top speed exceeding 400 km/h. By contrast, the Ford-based replica’s V6 delivers far less power, and its 0-100 km/h acceleration is reportedly three times slower than the real Veyron’s sub-3-second figure.

What buyers actually get for $89,000

The replica includes features from the donor Cougar, such as electric windows, central locking and the standard audio system. The interior is finished with aluminium inserts to mimic the Veyron’s cabin, but the underlying architecture and equipment remain Ford. The climate system is also carried over from the Cougar.

  • Genuine Bugatti Veyron: Used prices typically well over $1 million
  • Ford Cougar-based replica: $89,000 asking price
  • Other known Veyron replicas use different donor cars, such as the Porsche Boxster

While the $89,000 price tag is a fraction of the cost of a real Veyron, it is more than five times the value of a typical used Ford Cougar in the US market. The seller’s ambition is clear: to offer exclusivity and supercar looks without the seven-figure outlay or maintenance costs associated with a genuine Bugatti.

Replica market and alternatives

Veyron replicas have appeared before, often using different donor vehicles and varying widely in quality and price. For example, a Polish enthusiast built a Veyron replica from a Porsche Boxster, focusing on visual accuracy rather than outright performance. These projects typically attract interest from collectors, enthusiasts or those seeking supercar looks on a more attainable budget.

The Bugatti Veyron remains one of the most expensive and exclusive production cars ever built. For buyers searching for the badge and performance, a replica cannot deliver the driving experience or collectability of the real thing. But for those content with the appearance alone, this Ford-based project offers an unusual and eye-catching alternative at a fraction of the price.
