Citroën Hypnos concept previews diesel-electric hybrid SUV
Citroën’s Hypnos concept, revealed with a diesel-electric hybrid drivetrain and advanced cabin technology, points to the brand’s ambitions in the crossover SUV segment.
Citroën introduced the Hypnos concept as a showcase for its diesel-electric hybrid technology and a new direction in crossover SUV design. The Hypnos pairs a 2.0-litre HDi diesel engine with an electric motor on the rear axle, producing a combined 200 bhp and 420 Nm from the engine, plus 50 bhp and 200 Nm from the motor. Citroën claimed the system could deliver 4.5 l/100 km fuel consumption and 120 g/km of CO2 on the combined cycle.
The Hypnos concept’s drivetrain, branded HYmotion4, combines a six-speed electronic gearbox with stop-start technology. The electric motor can drive the rear wheels independently, allowing for zero-emission running at low speeds for up to 3 km at 50 kph. In normal driving, the diesel engine powers the front wheels, but the driver can select a 4x4 mode for extra traction in difficult conditions, such as snow or steep gradients.
Performance and hybrid system details
Citroën quoted 0–100 kph in 9.4 seconds and a top speed of 212 kph. The Hypnos covers 1,000 metres from a standstill in 31 seconds, with a Cd of 0.30 and a gross weight of 1,800 kg. Its hydraulic suspension and 22-inch Michelin tyres (275/40 R22) underline the concept’s focus on comfort and presence. The hybrid system’s stop-start cuts the engine at idle, while the electric motor assists acceleration and enables all-wheel drive when needed.
The Hypnos also features a driver assistance system that monitors the driver’s state of mind using a camera mounted in the ceiling. The system measures facial data and adjusts the cabin’s ambient lighting and fragrance to improve comfort, introducing an early example of mood-sensing technology in a concept car. Citroën described this as colour therapy, aiming to enhance passenger wellbeing on long journeys.
Design, dimensions and interior technology
At 4,900 mm long, 2,036 mm wide (excluding mirrors), and 1,580 mm high, the Hypnos sits between conventional SUVs and large crossovers. Its 3,000 mm wheelbase and short overhangs contribute to cabin space and visual stance. The interior, designed as a showcase for future Citroën technology, uses bold colours and innovative materials, with a focus on creating a lounge-like atmosphere for all occupants.

The Hypnos concept did not enter production, but elements of its hybrid system and interior approach influenced later Citroën and DS models. The HYmotion4 layout, combining diesel power with rear-axle electrification, previewed hybrid strategies that would become more common in European SUVs.
