Daimler, Volvo, Toyota and Partners Target Hydrogen Trucking by 2030

Daimler Truck, Volvo Group, Toyota, Bosch and others are joining forces to develop a hydrogen ecosystem for heavy-duty vehicles, with a full plan due at IAA 2026.

Daimler Truck AG, Volvo Group, Toyota Motor Corporation, Bosch, Air Liquide, TotalEnergies, TEAL Mobility and MB Energy are working together to expand hydrogen mobility for heavy-duty transport in Germany and across Europe by 2030. The collaboration will focus on both hydrogen-powered trucks and the infrastructure needed to support them.

The partnership aims to create a fully integrated hydrogen mobility ecosystem for heavy-duty vehicles. This includes not only the trucks themselves but also the deployment of hydrogen refuelling stations along key strategic corridors across Europe. The intention is to ensure that hydrogen trucks can operate efficiently on long-haul routes, with reliable access to fuel.

Hydrogen infrastructure and cost targets

A critical part of the initiative is to make hydrogen a competitive option for freight operators. The partners are targeting a hydrogen price that will allow operators to achieve a total cost of ownership for hydrogen-powered vehicles that is competitive with conventional alternatives. This is intended to address one of the main barriers to the adoption of hydrogen in heavy transport, where cost and infrastructure have lagged behind battery-electric solutions.

The group’s plans include coordinated deployment of refuelling infrastructure, which is essential for scaling up hydrogen truck fleets. By focusing on strategic corridors, the companies hope to create a network that supports both domestic and cross-border freight movement.

Announcement at IAA 2026

Full details of the collaboration will be revealed at IAA Transportation in Hanover on 15 September 2026. The event is expected to outline the technical, commercial and operational aspects of the hydrogen ecosystem, as well as timelines for infrastructure rollout and vehicle deployment.

This multi-company effort reflects the growing momentum behind hydrogen as a solution for decarbonising heavy-duty transport, with major manufacturers and energy suppliers aligning their strategies to accelerate uptake by the end of the decade.
