Vettel, a four-time world champion and self-described purist, said spectators are finding it difficult to relate to modern F1 cars and their technology. He suggested that the complexity of hybrid power units and the volume of technical regulations have distanced the sport from its roots and made it harder for fans to follow what is happening on track.
He also pointed to the muted sound of the current engines as another factor that has diminished the spectacle. "The spectators must be able to identify with the car and the technology, as currently it is far too complex. Additionally, the sound is missing," Vettel said, highlighting that the visceral appeal of the sport has been reduced in recent years.

Vettel argued that Formula One should prioritise the sporting contest and the drivers’ abilities over an ever-increasing focus on technical detail.
