Chevrolet Unveils Four Concept Cars at 2014 São Paulo Motor Show
Chevrolet presented four concept vehicles at the 2014 São Paulo Motor Show, each designed to appeal to different segments of the Brazilian market, from track-inspired hatches to urban crossovers.
Chevrolet introduced four concept cars at the 2014 São Paulo Motor Show, each tailored to attract a different type of buyer in Brazil’s growing market. The line-up included the Onix Track Day Concept, Onix Effect, Prisma WTCC, and Spin Active, all based on models familiar to Brazilian customers but pushing their styling and equipment further than the production versions.
Onix Track Day Concept: Sporty Focus for Enthusiasts
The Onix Track Day Concept was Chevrolet’s most overtly sporting offering at the show. It featured a comprehensive aerodynamic body kit with revised side skirts, front and rear spoilers, and a lowered stance. Inside, Chevrolet fitted sport seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel, aiming to create a more focused driving environment. The visual upgrades were designed to appeal to younger buyers interested in customisation and track-inspired looks, though Chevrolet did not announce any mechanical changes or power increases for the concept.
Onix Effect and Prisma WTCC: Style and Motorsport Influence
Alongside the Track Day, Chevrolet showed the Onix Effect, a concept that emphasised cosmetic enhancements over outright performance. The Effect wore unique decals, a gloss-black roof, and bespoke alloy wheels. Its focus was on visual impact and personalisation, reflecting growing demand for sport-styled city cars in Brazil without the cost or insurance implications of true performance models.
The Prisma WTCC concept, based on Chevrolet’s sedan, took its inspiration from the World Touring Car Championship. It featured racing graphics, a lowered suspension, and larger wheels, giving it a motorsport-inspired stance. This car was a nod to Chevrolet’s international touring car involvement and was intended to generate interest among fans of the brand’s racing activities.
Spin Active: Urban Crossover Treatment
Completing the group, the Spin Active concept took Chevrolet’s compact MPV and gave it a crossover makeover. It gained increased ground clearance, roof rails, body cladding, and a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate. These changes were aimed at buyers looking for a more rugged look without sacrificing practicality. While the Spin Active previewed features that would later appear on production versions, at the time it served as a test of public reaction to the crossover trend in Brazil.
Concepts Reflect Local Preferences
Chevrolet’s decision to reveal four concepts tailored to the Brazilian market underlined the importance of South America to the company’s global strategy in 2014. Rather than importing designs from other regions, Chevrolet adapted its existing range to local tastes, using the São Paulo Motor Show as a platform to gauge customer interest in new trims, accessories, and styling directions. Several of the ideas previewed by these concepts would later influence production models in Brazil and other Latin American markets.
- Onix Track Day Concept: Aerodynamic kit, sport seats, flat-bottom steering wheel.
- Onix Effect: Visual upgrades, decals, gloss-black roof.
- Prisma WTCC: Racing-inspired graphics, lowered suspension, motorsport theme.
- Spin Active: Raised ride height, crossover styling, roof rails, tailgate spare wheel.
