Ford has pulled the wraps off the production version of the 2013 Fiesta ST at the Geneva Motor Show, confirming the long-awaited hot hatch for European markets. The new Fiesta ST, which had previously appeared as a concept, arrives with a 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine and a raft of chassis upgrades aimed at enthusiasts.

Powertrain and performance

At the heart of the Fiesta ST sits Ford’s 1.6-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder, producing 178 horsepower and 240Nm of torque. This output puts the Fiesta ST firmly among the most powerful cars in the B-segment hot hatch class at launch. Ford claims a 0-100km/h time of under seven seconds and a top speed of 220km/h, figures that will appeal to buyers cross-shopping rivals such as the Peugeot 208 GTI and Opel Corsa OPC.

The engine is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, sending power to the front wheels. Ford’s engineers have also fitted the ST with a specially tuned chassis, electronic stability control with three modes, and enhanced torque vectoring to help put the power down effectively in corners.

Styling and interior upgrades

The production Fiesta ST adopts much of the look previewed by the concept. Key features include a large trapezoidal grille, rear diffuser, and a prominent tailgate spoiler to set it apart from standard Fiestas. The stance is lower and more aggressive, underlining its performance intent.

Inside, the ST gets Recaro sports seats, carbon-effect trim, alloy pedals, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. Ford’s SYNC infotainment system appears as standard, and the car features a sound symposer to channel engine noise into the cabin for a sportier experience.

Market positioning and launch plans

Ford confirmed that the Fiesta ST will launch in Europe in 2013. The company has not detailed pricing or full market rollout, but the car is clearly targeted at buyers seeking an affordable, high-performance supermini. The ST’s power and equipment put it in contention with the latest crop of B-segment hot hatches, including the Peugeot 208 GTI Concept also shown at Geneva.

A US launch had not been confirmed at the time of the Geneva reveal, though Ford later announced plans to bring the Fiesta ST to North America as well. For more on the US model, see2013 Ford Fiesta St Confirmed for the U S.
