Honda Civic Type R test mule spotted in Ohio
A heavily camouflaged prototype of the Honda Civic Type R has been seen testing in the United States, suggesting North American development of the hot hatch is under way.
A camouflaged prototype believed to be the next-generation Honda Civic Type R has been spotted testing in Ohio, marking one of the first sightings of the performance hatch undergoing development on US soil. The sighting comes as Honda prepares to expand its Type R offering beyond Europe and Japan, with North American testing indicating a likely US market launch.
Photos from the test session show the Civic Type R mule wearing heavy camouflage. Despite the disguise, the car’s widened arches, prominent rear wing, aggressive bumpers and quad tailpipe exhaust system are clear. These features set the Type R apart from the standard Civic and align with the styling seen on recent European prototypes and the concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show.
Aggressive looks and performance focus
The prototype’s visual upgrades include extended front fenders, new front and rear bumpers, aerodynamic side skirts and a large rear diffuser. The rear wing sits high above the hatch, while the four exhaust outlets reinforce the car’s performance intent. Large wheels and low-profile tyres complete the package, hinting at serious chassis upgrades beneath the camouflage.
Under the bonnet, the Civic Type R is expected to use a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, with power output likely to be in the region of 320hp. This would put it in direct competition with rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf R, Ford Focus RS and Renault Megane RS. The engine will almost certainly drive the front wheels, as with previous Type R models, and a manual gearbox is expected to remain standard.
US-market development and competition
Testing in Ohio suggests Honda is engineering the Civic Type R for North American conditions and regulations. This move follows growing demand for high-performance hatchbacks in the US, where the Type R will face established competition from both domestic and European brands. The presence of a prototype on American roads indicates that Honda is serious about bringing the Type R to a broader audience.
While Honda has confirmed the development of a new Civic Type R, the company has not yet released official technical specifications or a launch date. The extensive camouflage on the test car suggests that the final design is still under wraps.
