Honda will shift its North American strategy towards hybrid vehicles from 2027, aiming to launch 15 new hybrid models in the region by March 2030. The company confirmed it will prioritise hybrids over electric vehicles in response to rising global demand for hybrid technology.

The new hybrid powertrain, named Honda Hybrid, will be introduced globally but with a particular focus on North America. The system builds on the engine, drive unit and control technologies developed for Honda’s e:HEV models, promising further refinement and efficiency gains. All new models will be based on a fresh platform designed to reduce weight and manage body rigidity differently from current offerings.

Honda Hybrid system to lead new model range

The Honda Hybrid system is a direct evolution of the e:HEV architecture, which already underpins several current models. The company’s decision to invest in a new platform suggests a commitment to both efficiency and dynamic improvements, targeting buyers who are not yet ready to switch to full electric vehicles. This approach aligns with recent market trends indicating softening demand for EVs in the United States, as hybrids continue to outsell battery-electric models in several segments.

  • Honda Hybrid system develops e:HEV engine and drive unit technology.
  • New platform will cut weight and manage rigidity differently.
  • 15 models planned for launch by March 2030.

Why Honda is focusing on hybrids

Honda’s hybrid strategy is a direct response to increased global demand for hybrid technology. The company now sees hybrids as its main volume driver, especially as US electric vehicle sales growth slows. This shift in focus is expected to influence Honda’s development and production resources worldwide, with North America positioned as the lead market for the new generation of hybrid models. The move follows a series of hybrid launches in the past decade, including the Accord Hybrid and Civic Hybrid, and continues Honda’s tradition of hybrid innovation.
