Hyundai has confirmed it will introduce the Veloster Turbo to the UK market in the second half of 2012, expanding its performance line-up with a turbocharged version of the three-door coupe. The announcement comes ahead of the car’s official unveiling at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2012.

The Veloster Turbo is expected to use a turbocharged 1.6-litre GDI petrol engine. While Hyundai has not released full technical details for the UK model, the version previewed by ARK Performance at the SEMA show developed 210hp after upgrades to the standard engine, including a new turbocharger and intercooler. The production model’s output is likely to be in a similar range, positioning the car as a rival to established hot hatches.

Performance details and market position

Rumours ahead of the Detroit reveal suggested Hyundai might opt for a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, similar to the engine used in the Kia Optima SX Turbo, which produces 208hp and 195lb ft of torque. However, the ARK Performance SEMA concept focused on extracting more from the existing 1.6-litre engine, so Hyundai's final UK specification remains unconfirmed. Either way, the Veloster Turbo will sit at the top of the Veloster range, offering buyers a more powerful alternative to the standard model.

Hyundai’s decision to bring the Veloster Turbo to the UK follows a growing demand for compact performance cars. The sector is already crowded with models like the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST, both of which are also due for updates or launches in 2012. Hyundai is targeting buyers looking for something less conventional, with the Veloster’s unusual three-door layout and aggressive styling setting it apart from mainstream rivals.

Launch timing and showroom arrival

The Veloster Turbo will make its global debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2012, with US sales to begin shortly afterwards. UK buyers can expect the car to arrive in showrooms in the second half of the year. Pricing and final technical details will be confirmed closer to launch.

Hyundai has not indicated whether the UK version will differ significantly from the US model in terms of performance or specification. The company is likely to reveal more information following the Detroit show, as it seeks to establish the Veloster Turbo as a credible contender in the UK’s hot hatch market.

Competition and context

The Veloster Turbo’s arrival will coincide with new and updated performance models from other manufacturers. The Volkswagen Golf GTI is due for a new generation, and Ford’s Focus ST is confirmed for a major update. Hyundai’s entry will give buyers another option in a segment that remains highly competitive and popular among UK enthusiasts.

Further details on UK pricing, specification and final engine output are expected after the Detroit debut. Until then, the Veloster Turbo’s combination of turbocharged performance and distinctive design will be Hyundai’s pitch to British buyers seeking something different in the hot hatch class.
