Infiniti IPL G Convertible Enters Production Ahead of LA Debut
Infiniti has started production of the IPL G Convertible, its performance-focused open-top model, with the official launch set for the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.
Infiniti has started full production of the IPL G Convertible, expanding its Performance Line with an open-top model that will make its public debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. The move brings a second body style to the IPL range, following the earlier launch of the IPL G Coupe.
The IPL G Convertible is built on the same foundations as the standard G37 Convertible but receives a series of performance and styling upgrades. The centrepiece is a tuned 3.7-litre V6 engine producing 348hp and 276lb ft of torque, sent to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic gearbox. This output marks a modest increase over the regular G37 Convertible, positioning the IPL variant as a more focused, enthusiast-oriented option in Infiniti’s range.
Visual changes include unique front and rear bumpers, side sills and a sports exhaust system. The car sits on 19-inch alloy wheels and features a hard-top roof, maintaining its four-seat layout for open-air driving. Interior upgrades include sports seats and IPL branding, aiming to distinguish the car from the standard convertible.
Performance and positioning
With its uprated V6, the IPL G Convertible offers more power than the standard G37 Convertible but falls short of the output seen in some German rivals. Infiniti’s approach with the IPL line is to deliver a higher level of exclusivity and performance without the expense of a dedicated high-performance sub-brand.
