Sam Bird says lack of funding blocked Formula One career
British driver Sam Bird, who worked with Mercedes alongside Schumacher and Hamilton, says sponsorship demands kept him from a Formula One race seat.
Sam Bird, former Mercedes Formula One test driver, has said that a lack of sponsorship money was the decisive factor that prevented him from securing a full-time F1 race seat. Bird worked with the Mercedes team between 2010 and 2014, sharing the garage with drivers such as Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
Bird, who named Schumacher as his racing hero, reflected on his time at Mercedes and the realities facing drivers without major financial backing. He explained that, despite his experience and results, the absence of a large sponsorship cheque, he cited €20 million, proved insurmountable when it came to progressing to a race seat.
His comments came after he secured his third Formula E victory in Buenos Aires. Bird noted that, unlike in Formula One, he is now paid to race in Formula E rather than having to bring funding to a team. The remarks highlight an ongoing issue in Formula One, where drivers often need to secure substantial sponsorship to land a seat, regardless of their talent or experience.
Sponsorship as a barrier in Formula One
Bird’s experience is not unique. Several drivers have faced similar obstacles, with teams increasingly reliant on drivers who can bring funding. The financial demands have sometimes outweighed on-track performance in determining who gets a chance at the top level.
