Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder priced at $209,000 in the US

Lamborghini sets the US price for its rear-wheel-drive Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder at $209,000, offering a V10 drop-top with 550hp and a focus on driver engagement.

Lamborghini has confirmed that the Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder will start at $209,000 in the United States, positioning the rear-wheel-drive convertible as a more focused alternative to the all-wheel-drive Gallardo Spyder models. Orders for the new variant are now open.

The LP550-2 Spyder is the first open-top Gallardo to send power to the rear wheels only, following the formula set by the limited-edition LP550-2 Valentino Balboni coupe. Lamborghini’s decision to offer this configuration in a convertible brings a more purist driving experience to the Gallardo range, with reduced weight and a more lively rear end compared to the standard all-wheel-drive Spyders.

Under the engine cover sits the familiar 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10, mounted longitudinally and producing 550hp. Lamborghini claims the LP550-2 Spyder sprints from 0 to 100km/h in 4.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 319km/h. While the acceleration is slightly slower than the closed-roof LP550-2 Balboni coupe, the top speed remains identical.

Rear-wheel drive focus

By dropping the all-wheel-drive system, the LP550-2 Spyder is lighter and delivers a more direct connection between driver and road. This makes it the only rear-drive convertible in the Gallardo line-up at the time, aimed at enthusiasts who value handling purity over outright traction. The rear-drive layout also allows for more playful dynamics, especially with the roof down.

The LP550-2 Spyder joins a Gallardo range that also includes the all-wheel-drive LP560-4 and higher-performance LP570-4 models, but stands out for its mechanical simplicity and focus on driver engagement. At $209,000, it is priced below the more powerful LP570-4 Spyder Performante, but above the entry-level LP 560-4 Spyder, reflecting its unique position in the line-up.

How it compares to rivals

The Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder’s closest rival in the US market is the Ferrari 458 Spider, which was announced at a higher starting price of $257,000. While the Ferrari offers a mid-mounted V8 and a folding hardtop, Lamborghini’s offering focuses on rear-drive thrills and open-air V10 sound. Buyers looking for a more exclusive or analogue driving experience may find the LP550-2 Spyder’s layout particularly appealing.

Ordering and availability

US customers can order the Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder immediately. Lamborghini has not announced production limits for the model, unlike the numbered LP550-2 Balboni coupe, but the rear-drive Spyder is expected to remain a niche choice within the Gallardo line-up until the arrival of its successor.
