Maruti Suzuki Invests Rs 2,500 Crore to Expand Diesel Engine Capacity at Manesar

Maruti Suzuki’s 2008 investment in Manesar aimed to triple output and boost diesel engine production, responding to surging demand for diesel-powered models like the Swift, SX4 and Dzire.

Maruti Suzuki India committed Rs 2,500 crore in 2008 to expand its Manesar plant, targeting a sharp increase in both overall car production and diesel engine capacity. The plan aimed to triple Manesar’s annual output and respond to the growing popularity of diesel-powered models in the Indian market.

At the time, Manesar’s annual capacity stood at 100,000 units. The expansion plan set an interim target of 170,000 units by March 2008, with a further rise to 300,000 units by October. This scale-up was part of a broader strategy to push Maruti Suzuki’s total installed capacity in India, across Manesar and Gurgaon, beyond 900,000 units per year, making it the country’s largest carmaker by output.

Diesel engine production ramps up

A major part of the investment was directed at the diesel engine line at Manesar. Maruti Suzuki increased diesel engine capacity from 100,000 to 120,000 units annually by March 2008, responding to a surge in demand. The Swift diesel, powered by Fiat’s 1.3-litre Multijet engine (badged DDiS by Maruti), was a particular success. Of the 172,000 Swifts sold up to January 2008, 50,000 were diesel variants.

The Manesar plant assembled these engines under licence from Fiat, supplementing supplies sourced directly from Fiat India. This arrangement allowed Maruti to meet customer appetite for diesel models at a time when the price gap between petrol and diesel fuel favoured diesel cars. The diesel engine line at Manesar was also intended to support production of other models, including the SX4 and Swift Dzire, both offered with diesel options.

Models and future plans

In early 2008, Manesar produced the Swift, SX4 and Swift Dzire. The Dzire had just launched, priced at Rs 4.32 lakh for the petrol and Rs 5.22 lakh for the diesel (ex-showroom Bangalore). Maruti Suzuki planned to add the Concept A-Star and Splash to Manesar’s production lines, with launches scheduled for late 2008 and early 2009 respectively.

  • Swift diesel: 50,000 units sold by January 2008
  • SX4 and Swift Dzire: diesel variants assembled at Manesar
  • Future models: A-Star (due October 2008), Splash (early 2009)

Long-term context and later developments

Maruti Suzuki’s 2008 diesel expansion reflected the market’s strong preference for diesel cars at the time. The company’s diesel engine strategy relied on Fiat’s 1.3-litre Multijet, both sourced from Fiat and produced under licence at Manesar. This engine powered several of Maruti’s best-sellers for over a decade.

By 2018, however, Maruti Suzuki prepared to shut its diesel engine line at Gurgaon, reflecting falling diesel demand and the cost of meeting Bharat Stage VI emissions rules. The company shifted focus to petrol, CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles, with the Manesar diesel line expected to satisfy any remaining diesel demand in the short term. The shift marked the end of a cycle that began with the 2008 diesel expansion at Manesar.
