MINI Superleggera production remains undecided after 2014 concept

MINI has not reached a decision on whether to produce the Superleggera Vision, the striking electric roadster concept first revealed at the 2014 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. The project remains under review, with company executives citing economic challenges as a major factor holding back a green light for production.
Concept car origins and reception
The Superleggera Vision was developed in collaboration with Touring Superleggera of Milan and presented as a modern take on a classic British roadster, blending traditional hand-shaped aluminium bodywork with MINI’s familiar design cues. Its debut at Villa d’Este generated strong interest, with the car’s minimalist cabin, premium materials and electric drivetrain drawing praise for both style and substance. Ongoing production debate
By late 2015, MINI’s leadership had not committed to building the Superleggera. Peter Schwarzenbauer, who oversaw MINI, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad, described the project as economically challenging, but acknowledged he continued to advocate for it within BMW Group. No formal production plan had been approved, and the company had not announced a timeline for a final decision.
Insiders suggested the production version would retain much of the concept’s exterior design, with some updates likely for series manufacture. The minimalist interior, premium leather and aluminium trim would be carried over if the car reached showrooms. However, MINI’s cautious approach to niche models made immediate approval unlikely.

The Superleggera Vision represented a departure from MINI’s core hatchback and crossover range, aiming to add a halo roadster to the line-up.
