Honda has confirmed that its refreshed CR-V will go on sale in the UK from January 2010, with prices starting at £20,175 for the entry-level 2.0-litre petrol SE. The revised line-up introduces the new 2.2-litre i-DTEC diesel engine, which is now available with an automatic transmission for the first time in the CR-V.

The new diesel, already seen in the Accord, produces 150PS and 350Nm of torque, representing a 10PS and 10Nm increase over the previous engine. Buyers can now choose between a six-speed manual or a newly-developed five-speed automatic gearbox, broadening the diesel CR-V’s appeal. The automatic diesel delivers 0-62mph in 10.6 seconds and a top speed of 116mph, while the manual achieves 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds and tops out at 118mph.

Honda has also focused on refinement, adding extra sound deadening around the engine and cabin to reduce noise, vibration and harshness. Inside, the CR-V benefits from upgraded fabrics, improved plastics and a redesigned audio console. All models are now Euro 5 compliant.

CR-V range and equipment

The 2010 CR-V is offered in SE, ES and EX trims, with each step up bringing more equipment. SE models now include 17-inch alloys, air conditioning, an auxiliary socket and power-heated door mirrors. ES specification adds 18-inch alloys, auto-dimming mirror, cruise control, double-deck cargo space, electric folding mirrors, half leather and Alcantara heated seats, headlight washers, fog lights, leather steering wheel and gear knob, rear parking sensors, unique interior trims and a USB connector.

EX models are distinguished by full body-coloured bumpers and gain DVD voice-activated sat-nav with premium audio, full leather upholstery, HID Xenon headlights, panoramic roof, rain sensor, reverse tilt mirror and an eight-way power driver’s seat. An Advanced Safety Pack, including extra driver aids, is available on EX versions.

Fuel economy stands at 43.5mpg for the manual diesel and 38.2mpg for the auto.

The updated CR-V arrives at a time when UK new car prices have been edging up, but Honda’s pricing strategy keeps the CR-V competitive against rivals in the increasingly crowded SUV segment. The diesel automatic, in particular, fills a previous gap in the range and is expected to broaden the car’s appeal to both private and fleet buyers.
