Next-Gen Hyundai Genesis Coupe Rumoured With 5.0L V8 Option
Hyundai is reported to be considering its 5.0-litre Tau V8 for the next Genesis Coupe, potentially placing it above existing four- and six-cylinder versions.
Hyundai is reportedly preparing a major overhaul for its Genesis Coupe, with sources indicating the next generation could be offered with the company’s 5.0-litre Tau V8 engine. This would mark a substantial step up from the existing four-cylinder turbo and V6 options, positioning the new model as a flagship performance coupe in Hyundai’s line-up.
The Tau V8, already available in the Genesis luxury saloon, produces 420hp. If installed in the Genesis Coupe, it would significantly outgun the current range, which is topped by a 3.8-litre V6. The move would bring the Genesis Coupe into direct competition with established V8-powered rivals, particularly in North America, where the pony car segment is strong.
Positioning above current models
If the V8 option comes to production, it would sit above the existing turbocharged four-cylinder and V6 variants. The current Genesis Coupe line-up is led by a 3.8-litre V6, while the four-cylinder turbo caters to buyers seeking lower running costs. The V8 would serve as a halo model, aimed at enthusiasts and buyers looking for more power and refinement.
No official confirmation has come from Hyundai, but the rumour aligns with the company’s recent push to enhance its performance credentials. The move would also distance the Genesis Coupe from the Veloster, which at the time was facing an uncertain future regarding a second generation.
Styling inspired by HND-9 Concept
Styling for the next Genesis Coupe is expected to draw from the HND-9 Concept, unveiled at the 2013 Seoul Motor Show. The concept featured Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design language, butterfly doors, a long bonnet, hexagonal grille, and large 22-inch alloy wheels. The HND-9 was powered by a 3.3-litre turbocharged engine with 362hp, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
While the concept’s butterfly doors and some details are unlikely to reach production, the overall proportions and design cues are expected to influence the next Genesis Coupe, especially if Hyundai intends to target premium coupe buyers.
Where the V8 Genesis Coupe would sit
A V8-powered Genesis Coupe would give Hyundai a direct answer to V8 muscle cars from Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge, at least in markets where such engines are still in demand. It would also reinforce the Genesis Coupe’s role as a performance flagship, distinct from the Genesis saloon and Hyundai’s mainstream models.
