Nissan NV200 Named International Van of the Year 2010
Nissan’s NV200 has secured the International Van of the Year 2010 award in Europe, recognised for its interior space, packaging and versatility among compact light commercial vehicles.
Nissan’s NV200 has been awarded International Van of the Year 2010 by a panel of 23 European commercial vehicle journalists, marking a strong entry for the brand’s new compact van across the continent. The jury highlighted the NV200’s interior packaging and cargo space, noting its significant achievements for small vans in the sector.

Jury Recognition and Key Features
The International Van of the Year jury praised the NV200 for its efficient use of space, particularly the way it maximises interior cargo capacity within compact external dimensions. The van’s design focuses on providing a practical and spacious load area while maintaining a footprint suitable for urban environments. At 4.4 metres long, 1.86 metres tall and 1.69 metres wide, the NV200 sits firmly in the small van segment. Despite its size, it offers a load bay over two metres in length and a cargo volume of 4.2 cubic metres. This allows the NV200 to transport two standard Euro pallets, a feature not always available in rivals of similar size. The cargo floor, at just 524mm from the ground, makes loading easier and increases its appeal for urban delivery operators.
The NV200’s packaging was singled out as a key advantage, offering around 25 percent more cargo volume than the average in its class, according to the jury’s assessment. This additional space provides operators with greater flexibility and efficiency in daily use.
European Launch and Global Expansion
European sales of the NV200 began in late 2009, with initial vehicles sourced from Nissan’s Japanese production lines. Local European production was scheduled to follow, reflecting Nissan’s intention to build the NV200 as a global model. The van had already seen early success in Japan, where it quickly took a leading market share in its segment. Plans were in place for launches in China and other regions during 2010, with production expansion to support these markets.
The NV200 range in Europe included both van and combi variants, with a passenger version scheduled to join the line-up in 2010. Nissan positioned the model as a versatile solution for business and private users needing a compact but spacious vehicle. The company also announced that a light commercial vehicle based on the NV200 would become its second electric vehicle, following the Leaf, indicating a future expansion towards electric vans.
Competition and Industry Context
The NV200’s award places it alongside other recent van and car award winners, such as the Citroën DS4, which was named 2012 Gay Car of the Year in France, and the Renault Duster, which took Argentina’s SUV of the Year title for 2011. Recognition from independent juries is often used by manufacturers to boost the profile of new models and support early sales efforts.
With the NV200’s recognition and Nissan’s plans for global production and expansion, the model was positioned as a core part of the company’s commercial vehicle strategy heading into the new decade. Its focus on cargo space and usability within a compact package made it a strong competitor for urban and small business operators across Europe and beyond.
