Peugeot 2008 DKR prepares for Dakar Rally return
Peugeot has unveiled the 2008 DKR, a purpose-built rally raid car, as it readies its first Dakar Rally entry in over two decades for the 2015 event.
Peugeot has revealed its 2008 DKR rally raid car ahead of the company’s return to the Dakar Rally in January 2015, marking the French manufacturer’s first appearance in the event since 1990. The unveiling of the 2008 DKR signals Peugeot’s renewed interest in one of motorsport’s most demanding events, and it comes after a 25-year absence from the rally. The car is set to make its public debut at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show, where more technical details are expected to be released.
Peugeot 2008 DKR: Return to the Dakar Rally
Design and Engineering
The 2008 DKR is a bespoke competition machine, loosely inspired by the Peugeot 2008 road car but extensively modified for the rigours of endurance rallying. Peugeot Sport has opted for a striking and aggressive design, featuring a wide stance, high ride height, and short overhangs to cope with the punishing South American terrain that characterises the modern Dakar Rally. The car’s black livery, flared wheel arches, and prominent rear wing highlight its purpose as a serious Dakar contender.
Technical details about the 2008 DKR remain limited ahead of its official debut. However, Peugeot has confirmed that the car will run on 37-inch Michelin off-road tyres, which are essential for the unpredictable surfaces encountered during the rally. The two-door layout, with the rear doors deleted, helps save weight and improve chassis rigidity. A short front overhang is designed to enhance approach angles, a critical factor when tackling dunes, rocks, and other challenging obstacles on the rally route.
Peugeot’s Dakar Heritage
Peugeot’s return to the Dakar Rally is significant given the brand’s impressive history in the event. The manufacturer last competed in the late 1980s, achieving four consecutive victories with the 205 T16 and 405 T16 models. These successes established Peugeot as a dominant force in cross-country rallying. The 2008 DKR project, developed with support from long-time partner Total, marks a renewed factory commitment to the sport and aims to build on this legacy.
Experienced Driver Line-up
Peugeot has assembled a highly experienced driver pairing for its Dakar return. Former World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz, who previously won the Dakar Rally with Volkswagen, joins the team. Alongside him is Cyril Despres, a five-time Dakar motorcycle winner now making the switch to cars. Their combined expertise and proven track records in rally raid competition give Team Peugeot Total a strong foundation for the 2015 event.
The Dakar Rally Challenge
The Dakar Rally is widely regarded as one of the toughest events in motorsport, testing vehicles and crews over thousands of kilometres of harsh terrain. The rally attracts works entries from major manufacturers such as MINI and Toyota, with Volkswagen having previously dominated the event using the Race Touareg. Peugeot’s entry with the 2008 DKR is expected to intensify competition, as the team seeks to recapture the success of its Group B era and challenge established rivals.
