First Spy Photos Capture Porsche 998 Test Mule

Porsche engineers have begun road testing the next-generation 911, with early 998 test mules photographed wearing 997 bodywork but revealing key chassis changes.

Porsche has started on-road testing for its next-generation 911, with the first spy photos of a 998 test mule surfacing in July 2008. The prototype, seen on public roads, uses the body of the then-current 997 model but features tell-tale engineering modifications hinting at the changes beneath the skin.

The test mule appears at first glance to be a standard 997, but closer inspection reveals several engineering details that set it apart. The prototype sports wider fender extensions, suggesting a broader track or revised suspension geometry. A visible roll cage points to early-stage chassis development and on-road data collection, while the exhaust pipes are fitted imprecisely, further underlining the car’s experimental status.

Such mules are a common step in Porsche’s development process, allowing engineers to trial new hardware using existing bodywork before finalising the exterior design. The presence of the roll cage and extended arches indicates that Porsche is already testing major changes to the car’s underpinnings, rather than simply minor updates.

Chassis and bodywork clues

The wider wheel arches on the mule suggest Porsche is working on a broader platform, likely to improve handling and accommodate wider tyres. The roll cage is not standard in road cars and is typically used in early development vehicles for safety during high-speed testing or when trialling new suspension and chassis layouts. The test car’s exhaust system, which does not fit cleanly within the 997 body, is another indicator that the powertrain or rear subframe may be undergoing revision.

Porsche only recently unveiled the facelifted 997, so the appearance of a 998 mule so soon after signals the brand’s intent to keep the 911’s engineering moving forward. The 998 is expected to debut in 2011, meaning a three-year development window from these initial road tests. Early mules like this one are typically followed by later prototypes wearing more production-accurate bodywork as the launch date approaches.

What the 998 mule means for the next 911

For buyers and Porsche fans, these early spy shots confirm that the next-generation 911 will likely bring more than cosmetic changes. A wider chassis and possible alterations to the powertrain layout point to handling improvements and potentially new engine options. The use of a test mule at this stage allows Porsche to validate hardware changes in real-world conditions before committing to final production tooling.

As development continues, later prototypes are expected to shed the 997 disguise in favour of bodywork closer to the finished 998. For now, the engineering changes visible on this test mule offer the first tangible clues to the direction Porsche is taking with its next 911.
