Porsche is working on a 911 Safari off-road concept, with plans to unveil the model at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show. The 911 Safari name is a reference to the 1978 911 SC Safari, which competed in the East African Safari Rally. That car’s raised ride height and reinforced bodywork have become legendary among Porsche enthusiasts and rally fans. For the new concept, Porsche is expected to fit a raised suspension, underbody cladding and larger tyres, as well as an all-wheel drive system. The base for the concept is reportedly the Carrera 4S, which already offers four-wheel traction and a wide track.
The car is being developed with emerging markets in mind, particularly China, Russia, South America and the Middle East, where poor road surfaces can limit the appeal of low-slung sports cars.
