A rare 1980 Lada Niva 4x4 has appeared on eBay, offering American buyers a chance to own one of the Soviet Union’s enduring off-road icons. The starting bid stands at $6,000, and the listing highlights both the model’s scarcity in the US and its unusual powertrain swap.

The Niva, originally built by AvtoVAZ in the USSR, was designed as a compact, rugged off-roader for challenging conditions. While it became a common sight across Eastern Europe and Russia, few examples ever made it to North America. This particular car, as described by the seller, carries a 1981 Fiat Spider double overhead cam engine with Bosch fuel injection, mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The engine has reportedly only done 9,700 miles.

A rare sight in the US

Lada Nivas are seldom found on American roads, due to limited official imports and the model’s association with Eastern European markets. The seller notes the vehicle’s Soviet origins on the door plate and draws attention to its connection with Russian off-roading culture. The car’s rarity in the US is a key part of its appeal for collectors and enthusiasts seeking something distinct from the usual classic SUV fare.

The eBay listing points out that, despite its age, the Niva’s only reported issues are non-functional headlight wipers and a spare tyre that does not hold air. No warranty is offered, which is typical for a 43-year-old car with a bespoke engine conversion.

Context and collector interest

Lada Nivas have developed a following among classic 4x4 collectors for their simplicity and off-road ability. This example’s Italian engine transplant and low mileage may attract buyers looking for a unique project or a conversation piece. While the Niva is still produced in various forms, including under the Lada Taiga name in some markets, early models like this are increasingly rare outside their original territories. At the time of writing, the eBay auction had not received any bids. Whether the car reaches its starting price or attracts a bidding contest will depend on how many enthusiasts are willing to take on a rare Soviet off-roader with a twist.
