Saint-Gobain has opened a new $50 million plant in Qingdao, China, expanding its presence in the country’s automotive supply sector. The facility, run by the group’s Solar Gard subsidiary, specialises in window films and backsheet materials for both automotive and architectural applications.

The Qingdao site is located near Saint-Gobain’s existing flat-glass production plant in the coastal city, and will focus on safety, security, glare reduction and energy-saving films. With this investment, Saint-Gobain aims to strengthen its position in China’s fast-growing vehicle and construction markets, where demand for advanced glazing and film solutions is rising.

Capacity and product focus

The new coating facility is designed to double Saint-Gobain’s automotive glass output in China. According to the company, once fully operational, the plant will be able to equip glass for up to 1.5 million vehicles annually. Production will ramp up gradually, with full capacity targeted for 2014.

The factory’s main products include window films for safety, security, glare reduction and energy efficiency, as well as backsheet materials used in various glazing applications. These are supplied to both automotive manufacturers and the architectural sector across China and the wider Asian market.

Saint-Gobain’s growing Chinese footprint

The Qingdao plant joins Saint-Gobain’s existing network in China, which includes a factory in Nanjing and a processing facility in Shanghai. The company’s strategy has been to localise production close to major automotive and construction hubs, supporting both international and domestic clients.

Saint-Gobain Solar Gard distributes its products through a network of over 1,800 Quantum and Solar Gard outlets in China. The group expects the new facility to support growing demand for energy-efficient and safety-focused glazing, as well as to reinforce its supply chain in the region.

China’s demand for automotive glass and films

The investment reflects the rapid growth of China’s automotive market, where manufacturers and suppliers are scaling up to meet rising production volumes. Saint-Gobain’s move follows similar expansions by global suppliers in China and other emerging markets, as seen in recent investments by firms such as AvtoVAZ in Kazakhstan and Mahindra Reva in India.

By doubling its automotive glass production capacity in China, Saint-Gobain is positioning itself to serve both established carmakers and new entrants, as the country continues to open its vehicle production sector to wider competition.
