Seat’s Leon ST Cupra estate has been spotted in testing, revealing the Spanish brand’s plans to launch a high-performance version of its compact estate in 2014.
Seat’s plans for a performance estate version of the Leon have moved a step closer with the Leon ST Cupra caught testing ahead of its expected 2014 launch. The car, seen in near-production form, marks the first time Seat has offered a Cupra-badged estate, extending its hot hatch line-up into the practical wagon segment.
The test car, photographed with minimal camouflage, shares its styling cues with the Leon Cupra hatch but adds the extended roofline and larger boot of the ST estate. Aggressive bumpers, large alloy wheels and prominent twin exhausts signal its Cupra status. The car’s stance and visible brake hardware suggest a chassis tuned for higher performance than the standard Leon ST.
Engine and performance expectations
Although Seat has yet to confirm technical details, the Leon ST Cupra is expected to use the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the Cupra hatch. Reports suggest an output of around 268bhp, driving the front wheels. This would place the ST Cupra in direct competition with estate versions of the Ford Focus ST and Skoda Octavia vRS, both of which use similar powertrains.
The Cupra badge has previously been reserved for Seat’s sportiest hatchbacks, but the addition of the ST estate reflects growing demand for practical cars with hot hatch performance. The expected power figure would put the Leon ST Cupra just below the Volkswagen Golf R Estate, but ahead of most mainstream rivals in the segment.
Cupra R and future variants
Sources indicate that Seat is also working on a more powerful Cupra R variant, which could push output closer to 300bhp and potentially adopt all-wheel drive. This would bring it in line with the most powerful models in the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, such as the Audi S3 and Golf R. However, the initial ST Cupra is expected to remain front-wheel drive, with a choice of manual or DSG dual-clutch gearboxes possible.
