Seat Leon ST to Offer Four-Wheel Drive and Right-Hand Drive for UK Market
Seat has confirmed the Leon ST estate will be available with four-wheel drive and right-hand drive, targeting UK buyers from late 2013.
Seat will bring a four-wheel drive, right-hand drive version of its Leon ST estate to the UK, with sales planned to begin by the end of 2013. The announcement, made by Seat’s R&D chief Matthias Rabe during the Shanghai Motor Show, positions the Leon ST as a direct rival for other compact estates offering all-wheel drive in Britain.
The Leon ST’s all-wheel drive system is derived from Volkswagen’s 4MOTION technology, already used in the Golf Mk7. This marks the first time Seat has offered four-wheel drive in a right-hand drive Leon, addressing a gap for buyers needing extra traction in British conditions. The move brings the Leon ST in line with rivals such as the Skoda Octavia Scout and Volkswagen Golf Estate, both of which offer similar drivetrains.
At launch, the four-wheel drive option will be exclusive to the Leon ST estate. Seat has not confirmed whether the hatchback or other Leon variants will receive the system. The company has also not detailed the specific engine choices that will be paired with four-wheel drive, but the Golf’s 4MOTION system is typically offered with higher-powered diesel and petrol units.
