Formula 1 sponsors are expressing concern as the Bahrain Grand Prix approaches, with the event set to proceed despite ongoing unrest in the region. The FIA maintains that the race will take place, and Bernie Ecclestone has stated the event is “200 per cent” on. However, reports suggest that some sponsors have already withdrawn, citing fears over potential violence during the race weekend.

Sponsor representatives have indicated that all major backers are watching developments closely and are in regular contact with each other. Tim Bampton of Just Marketing noted that sponsors have little choice but to follow the sport’s lead, even if it means risking association with any incidents that might occur. The current uncertainty has left brands weighing up their exposure as the event draws near.

Political ties and silence from FIA leadership

FIA president Jean Todt has not commented publicly on the situation. His son Nicolas Todt’s GP2 team has business links with Bahrain’s crown prince, which some in the paddock believe has complicated the decision-making process. Mark Webber pointed out that Middle Eastern investment is now a substantial part of Formula 1’s funding, making the region’s races particularly sensitive for sponsors and organisers alike.
