BMW has confirmed US pricing for the X5 xDrive40e, its first plug-in hybrid SUV, with orders now open and a starting price including destination charge.
BMW has announced US pricing for its first plug-in hybrid SUV, the X5 xDrive40e, which is now available to order from $63,095 including the $995 destination and handling charge. This places the xDrive40e as the second most expensive model in the X5 range at launch.
The X5 xDrive40e pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 313hp and 332lb ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive system. BMW claims the hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 6.8 seconds, with a top speed of 130mph. In electric-only mode, it can reach up to 75mph.
Hybrid system and charging
The petrol engine produces 245hp and 258lb ft, while the electric motor adds 113hp and 184lb ft. The lithium-ion battery can be recharged from a household socket in 3 hours 50 minutes, or in 2 hours 45 minutes using the optional BMW i Wallbox. BMW quotes a combined fuel consumption of 69.1mpg US and CO2 emissions of 78g/km, based on European test cycles.
Position in the X5 line-up
At $63,095, the xDrive40e sits just below the top X5 models in the US, offering a lower-emission alternative to the traditional petrol and diesel variants. Its price reflects both the complexity of the hybrid system and its position as a premium, technology-led option within the X5 range.
