2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet debuts at Frankfurt with new tech and engines
The facelifted S-Class Cabriolet arrives at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, bringing subtle design tweaks, new powertrains and a major technology update to Mercedes’ flagship convertible.
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the 2018 S-Class Cabriolet at the Frankfurt Motor Show, updating its flagship four-seater convertible with new engines, subtle design changes and the latest driver assistance technology. The facelift follows closely on the heels of the revised S-Class saloon and coupe, with the cabriolet set to reach showrooms in 2018.
Design revisions and OLED lighting
The visual updates to the S-Class Cabriolet are restrained but effective. The front bumper has been reshaped for a sportier stance, while the headlamp clusters retain their shape but feature new internals. At the rear, the most noticeable change is the adoption of OLED tail lamps, each with 33 individually controlled elements that create dynamic lighting sequences when locking or unlocking the car. AMG variants introduce the Panamericana grille with vertical slats, giving the performance models a more aggressive look and aiding engine cooling. Standard models retain a chrome-accented grille for a more traditional appearance.
The fabric roof remains triple-layered for sound insulation and can be operated in 20 seconds. Revised bumpers and chrome-plated quad exhausts complete the exterior changes. New 20-inch wheel designs are available on AMG-Line specifications, and the overall silhouette remains faithful to the previous model, emphasising luxury and presence.
Interior and technology upgrades
Inside, the S-Class Cabriolet receives a new three-spoke steering wheel and the widescreen cockpit layout already seen in the saloon. This setup combines two 12.3-inch high-resolution displays under a single glass panel, providing configurable digital instrumentation and infotainment. The COMAND system has been upgraded with improved graphics, 3D mapping and expanded connectivity, including wireless phone charging. Voice control now extends to climate, seating and lighting functions.
Trim options expand with three new interior finishes and a new black-and-red upholstery choice. The focus remains on high-quality materials and customisation, with designo nappa leather and exclusive wood veneers available. The roof’s insulation ensures the cabin remains quiet even at speed, matching the refinement of the saloon and coupe.
Engines and performance
The 2018 S-Class Cabriolet introduces new powertrains in line with the rest of the S-Class family. The S560 replaces the previous S550, using a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 delivering 345kW (469PS) and 700Nm. This engine is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and enables a 0-100km/h time of 4.6 seconds, with claimed combined fuel consumption of 8.0L/100km. The S450 coupe-only variant features a 3.0-litre turbo V6 with 270kW and 500Nm, while diesel options include a 3.0-litre inline-six in two outputs: 286PS/600Nm and 340PS/700Nm.

The AMG S63 and S65 variants receive their own styling and performance upgrades, with the S63 adopting the new 4.0-litre V8 in a higher state of tune and the S65 retaining its 6.0-litre V12. The S63 now produces 450kW and 900Nm, while the S65 offers 463kW and 1000Nm. The S65 is the only model to use the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, with all others using the new 9-speed unit.
Driver assistance and comfort features
Mercedes-Benz has expanded the S-Class Cabriolet’s active safety and driver assistance systems. The updated Intelligent Drive suite includes Active Steering Assist, DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Emergency Stop Assist and Traffic Sign Assist. The system can now adjust speed for bends, junctions and roundabouts, and the Magic Body Control suspension operates at up to 180km/h. Remote Parking Assist is also available, matching features found on rival luxury models.
