Volkswagen Scirocco GTS revealed ahead of Shanghai debut
Volkswagen has unveiled the Scirocco GTS, a 220 PS hot hatch with distinctive styling and performance tweaks, ahead of its public premiere at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show.
Volkswagen has introduced the Scirocco GTS, a performance-focused variant of its coupé, ahead of the car’s official debut at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show on 20 April. The GTS slots above the standard Scirocco in the range, drawing on the facelifted model’s updates and adding a series of cosmetic and mechanical enhancements.
The Scirocco GTS is powered by Volkswagen’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing 220 PS (162 kW) and matched to either a six-speed manual or six-speed DSG gearbox. Performance figures are quoted at 0–100 km/h in 6.5 seconds, with a top speed of 244 km/h for the DSG and 246 km/h for the manual. This puts it close to the Golf GTI in terms of output and acceleration, using the same EA888 engine family.
Styling and equipment highlights
Visually, the GTS distinguishes itself with the R-Line exterior package, including revised front and rear bumpers, a roof spoiler, rear diffuser and side sill extensions. GTS decals are available as an option, echoing the look of the 1982 Scirocco GTS. Black mirror caps and red brake calipers add further contrast. Standard wheels are 18-inch Norwich alloys, while 19-inch Lugano wheels are optional. The car can be finished in Deep Black, Indium Grey, Urano Grey, Oryx White, Pure White or Flash Red.
Inside, the Scirocco GTS receives a sports steering wheel with a GTS logo, black headliner, stainless steel pedals and a golf ball-style gear knob. The standard infotainment system is Volkswagen’s Composition Colour unit. Optional features include Vienna leather upholstery and a panoramic tilt sunroof. Bi-xenon headlights and a multi-function steering wheel are also fitted.
Positioning and market context
The GTS arrives as the most overtly sporting Scirocco below the R, targeting buyers who want the looks and much of the performance of the flagship model without the full expense. Its 220 PS output matches the Golf GTI, but the Scirocco’s coupé body and unique styling elements set it apart within Volkswagen’s line-up. The Shanghai unveiling follows the previous year’s Scirocco facelift, which updated the core range’s styling and technology.
