VW Group confirms new roadsters for Porsche, Audi and VW

The cars are aimed at bringing fresh competition to the affordable sports car market, with each brand promising a distinct approach to design and performance.
Distinct roadsters, shared architecture
The project centres on a flexible platform designed for two-seat sports cars with the engine mounted behind the seats and power sent to the rear wheels. Volkswagen Group intends for each brand to tailor the basic architecture to its own style and market position, producing three visually and technically distinct cars. This approach echoes the group’s strategy with other shared platforms, but with a focus on driving dynamics and brand character.
Volkswagen's entry: BlueSport concept leads the way
Volkswagen’s roadster will target buyers looking for an affordable, lightweight sports car. The company previewed its intentions with the 2009 BlueSport concept, a mid-engined two-seater positioned as a rival to the Mazda MX-5. The production version is expected to use downsized, efficient four-cylinder engines to keep running costs low and appeal to drivers seeking everyday usability alongside open-top fun.
Porsche to revive the spirit of the 550 Spyder
Porsche’s version will sit below the Boxster in price and performance, drawing inspiration from the company’s 1950s 550 Spyder. The car will feature unique styling and, according to company plans, a new turbocharged flat-four engine currently under development. Pricing is expected to start above £30,000, positioning it as an entry point to Porsche ownership but with a clear nod to the brand’s heritage.
Audi R4: bridging the gap between TT and R8
Audi, which already offers the TT Roadster, will introduce a sportier R4 model based on the new platform. The R4 is expected to share some design themes with the R8 supercar, but at a lower price point. Audi plans to equip the R4 with a specially tuned version of its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. Pricing is likely to begin around £25,000, placing it above the TT but below the R8, and giving Audi a direct rival to other premium compact roadsters.
