Shelby American has unveiled three 50th Anniversary Edition Mustangs at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, marking half a century since Carroll Shelby’s name first appeared on a Ford Mustang. The commemorative line-up includes the Shelby GTS, GT350 and Super Snake, each produced in strictly limited numbers.

Shelby will build just 50 examples of each model in white and 50 in black, all finished with gold stripes as a nod to the classic 1966 Shelby GT350-H. Each car receives 50th anniversary badging, a unique vehicle identification number and a place in the Shelby American registry. The company is also offering a museum delivery ceremony at its Las Vegas facility for buyers, emphasising the collector appeal of these cars.

What distinguishes the 50th Anniversary editions?

All three anniversary Mustangs come with six-piston front brakes, special anniversary wheels, and a customised interior. The specification varies depending on the model. The GTS is positioned as the entry point, focusing on handling and agility. The GT350 continues Shelby’s tradition of high-performance modifications, while the Super Snake sits at the top, offering up to 800 horsepower for those seeking maximum power.

Shelby has not released official pricing for the 50th Anniversary Edition cars at launch. The company is targeting enthusiasts and collectors who value exclusivity and the Shelby heritage. The limited production run and special features are likely to ensure strong demand among Mustang fans and collectors of American performance cars.

Shelby’s approach mirrors other limited-run special editions, such as the BMW i3 Shadow Sport Editionand the Nissan Qashqai Premier Limited Edition, but with a focus on American muscle and Shelby’s racing legacy. The gold-striped livery and anniversary details set these cars apart from standard production Mustangs and previous Shelby models.

What it means for collectors and enthusiasts

With only 100 of each model available worldwide, the Shelby 50th Anniversary Edition Mustangs are expected to become sought-after additions to private collections. The unique VIN, gold stripes and inclusion in the Shelby registry reinforce their status as future classics. For buyers, the museum delivery in Las Vegas adds another layer of exclusivity and connection to the Shelby brand.

Shelby’s 50th anniversary Mustangs celebrate both the company’s history and its ongoing relationship with Ford’s iconic pony car. The trio’s debut at Detroit signals Shelby’s intent to continue building high-performance, limited-edition Mustangs for dedicated enthusiasts.
