Mercedes unveils 2009 E-Class Coupe with record aerodynamics
The 2009 Mercedes E-Class Coupe debuts ahead of its Geneva show launch, introducing efficient new engines and a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.24 Cd.
Mercedes-Benz has pulled the wraps off the 2009 E-Class Coupe, confirming its public debut for the Geneva Motor Show and a UK showroom arrival in June 2009. The new two-door model replaces the outgoing CLK and brings a mix of traditional coupe styling and advanced efficiency measures, including a world-best drag coefficient of 0.24 Cd for a series-production car.
Aerodynamics and efficiency lead the brief
The 2009 E-Class Coupe is designed around aerodynamic performance. Mercedes claims the new model’s 0.24 Cd sets a new benchmark, helping to reduce fuel consumption across the range. The coupe is also the first in its segment to combine pillarless side windows, without a B-pillar, with fully retractable glass, echoing classic Mercedes coupe proportions while improving airflow.
Engine options include a pair of new four-cylinder units, one petrol, one diesel, offering up to 17% lower fuel consumption than their predecessors. The E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupe returns a claimed 53.3 mpg and 139 g/km of CO2, making it one of the most economical options in its class at launch. The petrol E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY delivers 40.3 mpg and 204 hp. Higher up the range, the E 350 CDI diesel and E 350 CGI petrol offer six-cylinder performance, while the E 500 Coupe tops the line-up with a 388 hp V8.

Chassis, safety and technology
Standard-fit AGILITY CONTROL suspension adjusts damping automatically to suit road conditions and driving style. Buyers can opt for the Dynamic Driving package, which allows different suspension setups at the push of a button. Safety features include drowsiness detection, preventive occupant protection, an Active Bonnet for pedestrian safety, Adaptive Main Beam Assist and an automatic emergency braking system.
The coupe shares its platform and much of its technology with the E-Class Saloon, including selective damper control and the latest occupant protection systems. The styling, however, is more aggressive, with a lower, arrow-shaped front end, a sports radiator grille and the signature twin-headlamp face. The absence of a B-pillar and the fully retractable side windows remain signature coupe cues.
Interior and equipment
Inside, the E-Class Coupe introduces newly developed sports seats with standard electric adjustment for height and backrest angle. The cabin is trimmed to reflect the car’s more dynamic brief compared to the saloon, while retaining high levels of comfort and refinement expected from the E-Class range.
